Hi, I searched and searched and couldn't find a gift for my girlfriend for Christmas. I really did try, but I just couldn't find anything I thought she would like, so I got her a gift certificate to a department store, I thought she would want some clothes or something. I put it in a nice card and gave it to her. Now she's mad at me, what can I do?

First, gentlemen, the reason gift certificates are a bad idea by themselves is that a woman wants you to give thought to a gift. They want something that is special, something meaningful, something just for them. They also want something to open, a card isn't as much fun as a wrapped gift!

Jim, you can apologize because you did look but didn't find the perfect gift. Tell her you love her and you wanted her to be happy, so you thought she would be if you two went shopping together. Go with her shopping, just let her shop, tell her she's beautiful in whatever outfits she picks out, and use that as the opportunity to make up for something that upset her.
