Ever since your childhood prose of “Roses are red, violets are blue,” you have longed to impress others with your poetry skills. Most people have little experience writing romantic poetry and we aim to show you how.
If you are seeking to write romantic poetry to a partner, love interest or even just to someone who’s attention you are seeking, then you need to remember that poetry is as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. The easiest form of poetry to write is the limerick. Two lines that rhyme, more or less. For example: you’re as beautiful as a dove and how you fill my life with love.
Poetry is about expressing ideas and feelings. It’s also about entertaining others. You only need to possess an imagination to write poetry. While you may not be the next Keats or Shakespeare, poetry that comes from the heart – whether as an amusing jest or a declaration of true love.
You can write poetry with metaphors that are figures of speech comparing two things like ‘all the world is a stage and the people in it, but the players.’ Metaphors might have seemed hard in high school English, but they are a lot easier in practice than in study. You can use rhymes, metaphors, similes (a descriptive form using ‘like’ to link two things.) There are so many different ways to write a romantic poem, that you literally possess reams of freedom in that venue.
Remember to not try to force it unless the illusion of forcing the rhyme is part of its amusement. Poetry is about feelings and ideas and as such, there are no wrong ways to write a romantic poem to someone you care for. It doesn’t matter if your poem starts with ‘roses are red’ or ‘how shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,’ instead what is important is that you get across your meaning in whatever manner you enjoy doing.
Romantic poetry isn’t for everyone and you should never feel like you absolutely have to write a poem to prove your love or to demonstrate your affection. If you want to write it, that’s a different story.
