Emotional The emotional element of a person can include their self-esteem, respect of others, emotional stability, expressions, style, and many other things. An individual must have healthy confidence in himself before he can love another or truly be loved. You need to find someone who will believe you when you say, "I love you," who believes he/she is worthy of your love. Maturity and emotional stability also fall under this category. If evaluating a potential mate, ask yourself: how does he/she handle anger? Is he/she prone to unhealthy or prolonged depression? Spiritual Spirituality does not simply include religious persuasion (although that is a very important part.) It extends to a person's outlook on life, perspective on death, and ethics. What values or beliefs are sacred to you? Do you expect your future spouse to agree? What values do you expect to be instilled in your children? Does you religion prohibit you from marrying anyone outside of it? How would marrying into another faith affect your family dynamics (your parents, for example?) This is an often overlooked, but very important aspect to consider. Intellectual The intellectual side of someone includes their strength of personality, level of education, sense of humor, ambitions, learning styles, and thoughts. At times men who are very intellectual can be misunderstood as being cold-hearted or uncompassionate. What do you expect from your spouse in this area? The extremes of this element include those given to over-ambition or laziness. Continue The Makings of a Great Mate >> © 2000 Jeremy Reis, Heather Tomasello, Rights retained by author.
