For a girl/boy friend going off to college, the perfect gift is something for their dorm or apartment. Buy a lamp from the nearest craft store, the simple one with a paper lamp shade. Print out pictures of you, her, and you guys together on paper, and decorate the inside of the lamp shade with colorful tissue paper, and glue the pictures on the inside, and when the lamp is turned on, the pictures will light up the room along with the colorful tissue paper. With some typing paper, soak a piece in a tea bath to stain the paper. After staining and drying, burn the edges. With a calligraphy pen and some practice, write "your" song or a poem you wrote. Roll and tie with a ribbon.
